游子心 by Soloman

My Pre-U life by Danny Wong

You guys may wondering what type of Pre-U that I am taking, I am taking A-level (Advanced level) right now. Somebody may be don't know what is A-level. A-level is a type of Pre-U study. After Pre-U study, you can directly enter the 1st year degree if your Pre-U result is not too poor. A-level is also the same. The recognition of Cambridge international A-level examination is quite high especially recognized by University in UK, USA, Australia, Canada and so on. Cambridge international A-level examination also recognized by a lot of top universities. A-level is also recognized in Malaysia.

You guys may wonder why I choose A-level as my Pre-U study, that's because only A-level is the only way and also has the high opportunity to get what I want. Just let me simply explain what is A-level. We got different type of A-levels, Cambridge A-level is the one that I study right now.  Cambridge A-level is splited into two parts, which are Advanced Subsidiary level (AS level) and A-level (normally we call A2 level). Time interval which is needed to finish A-level is normally one and a half year.

I am taking A-level in science stream at the moment. The subjects that I take right now are Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Thinking Skills. You may wonder why I don't take Biology. First of all, I am very regret that I dropped Biology (if you want to know more detail about this, just ask me privately). You all may also wonder, what is thinking skills? Thinking skills it a subject that no need to study at home or no need to memorize anything. Thinking skills has divided into two parts which are Critical thinking and problem solving. Critical thinking just need to solve the problem critically, to become a critical thinker, you must think logically and critically.

"Problem solving" is just like mathematics. But they have very big differences, mathematics solve the problem by using the given formula while "problem solving" cannot solve the problem by using mathematics' formula, otherwise you will die in the examination. Your logic thinking must be very strong and you have to construct or derive a new formula yourself to solve the question. Besides, your English must be very strong in order to understand those "deep" words. Right now, thinking skills is the hardest subject I ever seen, because my English is very poor. Now I can go through Thinking skills in order to improve my English. For those who want to become a lawyer, your thinking skills must be very strong.

For Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, I think you guys know them already. The only change of those subjects is becoming much more complicated than SPM or equivalent. For AS level, those subjects do not have much different, Chemistry is the exception. Chemistry has a very big gap between SPM and A-level. But don't worry, not that hard actually, you have to learn more detail things only. You may wonder how about A2 level? A2 level is much harder and harder than AS level, therefore must do a lot of works on A2 level. Final result is according to AS level's 50% and A2 level's 50% that add up together, and hence for AS, you must work very hard in order get a good result to counterbalance your A2 result, otherwise you will suffer on A2 level. By the way, Thinking skills is in AS level only, A2 does not have it because it is too hard, and do not have the lecturer to teach, so it becomes an optional subject. Since A2 does not need Thinking skill already, therefore my A2 just left 3 subjects (not including biology). So you can be more focusing on the rest of those subjects.

Let's talk about my college, Riam Institute of Technology (Riam Tech). Riam Tech is just beside Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS). The area is smaller than what I have expected but everything is inside there. All classrooms are air-conditioned even the canteen. Food at the canteen is not bad actually, but after a long time of consuming those food, you would feel a little bit "disgusting" too. Therefore, I always go outside the school for my meals because there are better food and a variety of choices to choose from.

So, that's the summary of my A-level. Now I am going to talk about my study life. It is better than my life in SPM I think. I become more hardworking and more mature since I have started my Pre-U life. I think the main reason is because I am getting older and older. Unlike the childhood and secondary school period, I always play computer games. During my Pre-U study, I learn about how to manage my time and schedule. It is important because nobody manage it for you and YOU yourself have to manage it properly.

I stay with my landlords which are two old people. Including me, there are 3 people staying in one house. Even though my room is not that big, it is enough for 2 people to sleep! My landlords are very kind to me. They always buy me or give me something to eat. I am so lucky to stay with them because the rent fee is cheaper than someone could expect and they treat me very nice.

Last thing, once you have chosen the road, then don't be regret. Think positive, otherwise you will find it very hard to survive. I think that's the end of it, actually nothing more to write about, I just write about what I know, and hopefully this can be an useful info or good reference for those who want to further study in A-level.

P/S : Sorry for my grammar mistake, and my vocabulary is very weak. I actually want to use Chinese to write my essay, but, I have to improve my English skill in order to get a good result in IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

我在PLKN的日子~ by Eddie Lim

Anda telah terpilih untuk menyertai PLKN Siri 8/2011. Terima kasih!

Life in US

1/ What do you think about your life in US?
1.  Life in US is definitely great - different environment, different people and different language. From the first step I touched down in Seattle International Airport, Washington, I couldn't even believe that I’m in a totally different world.
After taking a 2 hours flight, I've come to this place called Bozeman, Montana.
If you ask me, how does Bozeman look like? I can tell you, it's just like Marudi. Well, slightly bigger than Marudi, the buildings are separated by a big distance, not much entertainments, lots of tress and you can tell it's full of natural surroundings.
It wasn't hard to adapt the life here, except for a few things which I will state below.

2/ What are the differences between life in Malaysia and US?
2. Weather, money and culture.
Weather is the biggest difference if you ask me. During summer, it could be as hot as Malaysia and it could be colder than Genting Highland at night. That's SUMMER. What makes you suffer is the winter. Bozeman is covered by snow for 6 months annually, which means half of the time you are surrounded by SNOWS. Yes snows, sounds fun and cool right? It isn't cool when you actually feel it. It's torturing, it makes u suffer. 7 months ago, I had the coldest week of my life, the whole week was -25 to -32 C, in case if you don't know how cold it is, your refrigerator is about 3 C only and winter is -20 and below.
Money, where all the things are counted in Dollars, but please, do not ever compare the price you pay for in Malaysia and US. One lousy burger in my school is about 6 dollars, which is RM 18. You can never compare like that. However, some stuffs are still cheaper in US, like milk. It's only 3 dollars for 1 big gallon (1 gallon is about 4 litres). If you wanna save up, just learn how to cook, that will save you a lot of money.
Culture - You can never see some random person speaks mandarin, at least hardly seen one. English is the main language, but since I’m living in a small town called Bozeman now, people here are friendly. Don't be shocked or afraid when someone comes up to you and say, “Hi”, it's very normal here. Greetings are the first thing when they first talk to you.
"How’re you doing" "How are you today?" that's the most common sentence I hear nowadays, but not in a big city...

3/ What do you think about American? Are they nice?
3. Americans are nice, but not all of them, but at least, they are polite in front of you. Racism happens everywhere, so don't be angry or anything, be nice, and you'll gain respect too. Anyway, there are still rednecks around, I remember last year we ride our bikes to a mall and some bloody rednecks threw wood on one of my friends, from a car. He drove pass us and threw at us. LOL.
Big city Americans are worse, they hardly talk to you, the self-consciousness of individual is too high and this is how they protect themselves. I’ve been to LA last month, trust me, LA isn't even US, it's like a freaking Asian, where you could hardly see a white, cause too many blacks, Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese are on the street.
Culture is the main key, in US, people are open-minded, they kiss in front of you, that's way too normal. Oh let me remind you, in public toilet, the toilet's surrounding won't get fully covered, there must be some small tiny lines that u can see through. Hahaha…
What about dorm's toilet? Some toilets don't even have a door lock! Curtains do the job and guess what? Their shower room has no door, only curtains! :D But too bad, it's splited up between boys and girls.

4/ Briefly describe your trip to South US.
4. My trip included Nevada, Arizona, and California. First destination - LAX (LA international airport), touched down and straight away rented a car and drove it to Arizona.
Arizona - Grand Canyon. It's a beautiful scene, and it was about 2500 - 3000 ft. down. There's a pic of me sitting at the cliff of Grand Canyon. Two steps away from 2500 ft. down.

After that, we drove to Nevada, for Hoover Dam and Las Vegas.
Hoover Dam - Remember Transformers One? Where they kept Megatron and the cube in? That's Hoover Dam, so I actually went to that place. Just a reminder if you wanna visit there next time, it's SUPER HOT AND DRY. Feels like a desert, just HOT HOT HOT!!!

Las Vegas - SUPERB city. It's named the Sin City for some reasons, a city that never sleeps. Lots of nice buffet, lots of casinos and of course a lot of people actually advertising prostitution ON THE STREET. You can hardly see a police on the main street, the main street is called "The Strip", but I personally suggest you that don't go to Vegas unless u are 21 and above. It'll be more fun if u are 21 +. Recommended days to stay in Vegas : 3 days 2 nights at least.

After Vegas we drove back to LA again, for the Hollywood Blvd. Hmm lots of "star signs", lots of people too. One day will be enough to finish Hollywood Blvd.

Next day, we went Anaheim for the Disneyland. Of course, it's a paradise for every kid, well, not to me but it was fun though. You need ONE full day to be in Disneyland. Why? Because at the end of the night, you'll see super nice fireworks, and some shows. That's the main point of going Disneyland.
We drove to San Francisco after Disneyland trip. San Francisco is the best city I've been to. I personally think you need at least 2 days 2 nights in San Francisco.

5/ What do you think about San Francisco?
5. First thing to visit in San Francisco - Alcatraz (The Rock), it's a prison back in the days, until Federal US closed it due to high expenses, it was also a military forces base. Worth to visit and you actually have to take a cruise to go on Alcatraz, because it's on an island.
Second thing is the Chinatown. If I’m not mistaken, China town of San Francisco is the biggest china town other than China itself. Lots of shops, lots of cheap stuffs and nice food, and most of them speak Cantonese!
Third, of course, GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE!
But before visiting the golden gate bridge, I suggest you to take the tour for Alcatraz and City bus tour. It's a package thing, provides you the cruise ticket and tour bus. MUST SIT ON TOP, it's double decker bus and there's no roof on the top of the bus! You can actually see the city clearly!
By taking the tour bus, you can also go across the Golden Gate Bridge, and you got the chance to stop at one end. What I did was WALKING through the bridge! It's cold up there, foggy, but it was super excited!
Also, what I liked about the bus tour is the tour guide provides you some nice historical explanations about San Francisco for every place your bus pass by. To understand more about my replies, I suggest you to go to my album and see the pictures. A picture is more than a thousand words that never go wrong.

人在KL by Wee Teck

KL,a place that never
sleep and cannot sleep...
The environment is well polluted...
The sound of horns from the vehicles are never ended...
The smell of junks that could be smelled anywhere...
The people over there would choose to ban you rather than letting you to pass...
the sky is always gray in colour and there is no star that can be seen...
The streets are full of rubbish and the mouse can be seen anywhere...
The taxi driver is very ' friendly' and they would try to bully you every time you ask for a price...
There are so many 'mamak' stalls that serve spicy food, the food is nice but spicy...
The MCD here sells food more expensive at night and with a 'better' service...

They would charge you for a plastic bag of 20 sens on every Saturday with
the reason of protecting the world, though they make profit out of the pollution to the environment...
There are many birds which are dark in colour and known as crow...
They really like to pull shit on our heads so need to be very carefull of the 'boom' that coming towards us...
The people here are nice with their manner...
They will treat you well if they think that you are useful to them...
But if you are useless, then they will treat you like a junk...
This the capital city that I know at the moment...
